Back to Adverse Childhood Experience.
*The ACE score is a measure of cumulative exposure to traumatic stress during childhood, and is often used in ACE-related research. The score is based on
the summation of eight adverse childhood experiences. Two of these experiences are domain events
or constructs, consisting of more than one question.
The sexual domain consists of three questions on forced/unwanted sexual contact. The substance abuse domain consists of two questions on living with someone
who abuses alcohol or drugs.
If the respondent answers YES to one or more questions in the sexual domain, the response counts as only one experience.
The same is true of the substance abuse domain. The remaining six questions in the module are then added
to the two domain scores to yield a total
ACE score of eight.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to changes in the weighting methodology and other factors, results from 2012 are NOT comparable to 2010
and earlier years.
***The estimate was suppressed because it did not meet statistical reliability standards. See BRFSS 2012 Annual Results Technical Notes for more details.
^Use caution in interpreting cell sizes less than 50, % = Percentage, C.I.(95%) = Confidence Interval (at 95 percent probability level).
Percentages are weighted to population characteristics and therefore cannot be calculated exactly from the numbers in this table.
