SCHS: Branches and Programs


The NC State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS) is part of the NC Department of Health and Human Services, NC Division of Public Health. SCHS is comprised of the following branches and programs.

The North Carolina Birth Defects Monitoring Program provides complete, timely and accurate data on birth defects in North Carolina, and collaborates with other organizations to produce high-quality research to inform local, state and national birth defect prevention efforts.

The NC State Center for Health Statistics, Business Systems and Intelligence (BSI) Branch is primarily responsible for administration of the applications and systems carrying vital events data. BSI supports and interfaces with partners, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

The Health and Spatial Analysis Branch uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other software to describe and analyze the spatial and temporal relationships that exist among diseases, mortality, births, environments and population characteristics within a public health context.

In partnership with county registers of deeds offices, local health departments, and birthing facilities throughout the state, the NC Office of Vital Records is responsible for recording North Carolina vital events. This includes responsibility for legally registering all births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and divorces which occur in North Carolina; coding these events for statistical purposes; maintaining these records; and providing certified or uncertified copies to individuals, researchers, and public health programs.
